Such is the case for Cyntoia Brown-Long, who was sentenced to life in prison for killing a 43-year-old man after he bought her for sex when she was 16 years old. Her case became national news when celebrities and activists shared the hashtag #FreeCyntoia in 2017. After serving nearly 15 years of her sentence, she was granted full clemency.
