Perhaps the only challenge greater than launching a startup company is beating the statistics associated with doing so. In today’s economy, three out of four startup ventures fail, yet Harvard Business School reports that 68% of entrepreneurs think the chances of their business succeeding are better than others in their sector. Jessica Kim remembers her psychiatrist father’s oft-repeated words, “If you believe in yourself, then everyone else will believe, too.” At 19 years old she started her first company “Jessica’s Wonders,” a Ben-and-Jerry’s of baked goods, out of her college dorm room. Jessica later went on to found BabbaCo (now owned by Barefoot Books) in 2008, but this time from her kitchen table as a new mom. Her talk will inspire us to hold onto hope against all odds because the risk just might pay off.
